About me

A short bio

My Name is Jörg (or Joerg) Steinkamp, a ‘J’ followed by 4 letters and a ‘S’ followed by 8 letters, therefore my domain is called J4S8.

Currently I work as a Linux administrator at the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz responsible for scientific data management. Before I was employed at Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Reserch Centre in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, working as a scientist on vegetation modeling with the Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (DGVM) LPJ-GUESS. From 2014 to 2017 I gave a course of remote sensing and ecology in R each summer semester at the University of Frankfurt. In 2011 I finished my PhD at the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry, working with the Atmospheric-Chemistry Global Circulation Model (AC-GCM) EMAC, based on the MESSy interface. And before doing my PhD I was a student assistant there, doing a lot of Linux related stuff, and developing a system to create custom figures for chemical weather forecast, which moved with my former office mate to the IASS in Potsdam. Here is a tabulated CV.

Beside my work, I enjoy sports (bouldering/climbing, running and cycling), working in the community garden Gartenfeld, coding, (e.g. a 3D-Visualisation Tool in R for LPJ-GUESS, a watch face for Garmin devices or a perl module to download MODIS tiles), taking unperfect photos (see my Galleries).
